Dental Hygiene Products
There are many different oral care products you can get today.
Your dental team will be able to recommend the best toothbrush and toothpaste for you to use, as well as the best way to clean between your teeth.
How often should I clean my teeth?
It is important that you brush last thing at night and at least one other time during the day, with a toothpaste containing fluoride.
Eating and drinking foods containing sugar and acids naturally weakens the enamel on your teeth. Brushing straight afterwards can cause tiny particles of enamel to be brushed away. It is best not to brush your teeth until at least one hour after eating.
It is especially important to brush before bed. This is because the flow of saliva, which is the mouth’s own cleaning system, slows down during the night and this leaves the mouth more at risk from decay.
It is important to clean your teeth for two minutes, twice a day especially last thing at night and at least one other time during the day. Usually two minutes is enough to remove plaque and to clean properly. Some people find using a stop-watch or timer useful as two minutes is often longer than you think. If you eat or drink certain sugary or acidic foods you may need to clean more often.

A hygienist’s best friend! Effectively cleans the gaps in between teeth that are too large for floss to clean. Each size is specifically for use in different sized gaps.
To use: Insert brush into the space between teeth at the gum level. Gently move brush back and forward a few times to remove plaque and debris. Always rinse brush in clean water after use. The brush should feel snug between the teeth, if it feels lose you may need a bigger size. You can place toothpaste onto the Tepe brush before use to help prevent cavities. Change your Tepe brush when the bristles become worn or wires become buckled or damaged.
Useful for cleaning crowded teeth, partially erupted wisdom teeth and very deep periodontal pockets.
To use: For crowded teeth, gently move the brush in small circular motions at the gum line and angle brush around the contours of the teeth. For partially erupted wisdom teeth, try and insert the brush under the gum flap and wiggle the brush around to dislodge plaque and food debris. For deep periodontal pockets, splay the bristles on the side of the tooth with the bristles pointing towards the gum, slide the splayed bristles into the gum pocket as far as they will go without causing pain and wiggle gently.
Oral B Satin Floss
This is not any ordinary floss! It is very thin and can fit between the smallest of gaps to clean out plaque and food from between your teeth while releasing a burst of minty freshness.
To use: Before brushing, wrap floss around index and/or middle finger. Use your index finger and thumb to guide floss gently between each tooth. Wrap the floss around each side of each tooth in a ‘C’ shape. Do not use a ‘sawing’ action as this can cause trauma to the gums. Just repeat the steps above if required.
Oral B Superfloss
Cleans the awkward gaps between braces, underneath bridges and larger spaces between teeth. One end is stiff to help threading, the middle has a spongy thick floss to clean and the other end has regular floss to remove plaque from between regular gaps in the teeth.
To use: Thread stiffened end through appliance and teeth, move the floss back and forth so that the spongy part removes plaque and food. Pull the spongy part through to the regular floss section and gently slide under the gum line using an up and down motion to remove plaque and food.
Perfect for people that find conventional floss too fiddly or people who like to floss on the move!
To use: Similar to conventional floss – ensure thread is gently placed in between each of the teeth, round the side of one tooth and then round the side of the other tooth at the gum margin.
Oral B 123 Toothbrush
The “by the book” toothbrush. It is exactly what hygienists are meant to recommend which is a small headed toothbrush with medium bristles. Good for cleaning all areas of the mouth including the difficult to reach back areas.
To use: Use gentle circular movements to brush the tooth and the gum, tilting the brush slightly towards the gum line. Brush all surfaces of the teeth including the inside, outside and biting surfaces. Brush twice a day, the most important being last thing before bed and spend at least 2 minutes brushing each time. Brushing alone will not remove plaque from in between the teeth so flossing or Tepe brushed may also be required.
Any new plaque present on the teeth will show up pink after use, so this product can be very helpful to show us any areas of our teeth that we are missing with a toothbrush or floss. Old plaque that has not been removed for 12 hours shows up blue!
To use: Either before brushing to show where the plaque builds up during the day or after brushing to show areas being missed by the toothbrush. Thoroughly chew up one tablet between the teeth and then rinse with water. Children under 12 years should be supervised by an adult.
Corsodyl treatment products can be used to treat your gums.
To use: Twice a day. Fill the cap to 10ml line. Rinse mouth thoroughly for 1 minute then spit out. As some toothpastes can stop Corsodyl treatment mouthwashes from working, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and wait 5 minutes after brushing your teeth before using Corsodyl.
Colgate Peroxyl is an oral antiseptic mouth wash with a unique oxygenating cleansing action. Facilitates healing and alleviates discomfort caused by minor mouth and gum irritations, such as gum inflammation, soreness and mouth ulcers.
